A Step Beyond the Threshold

When the front door opened slightly for an outgoing parcel, I scurried softly through the gap onto the tiled floor of the stairwell landing. It felt so big and airy out here! Right near the base of the painted banister, a smooth brass postal tag was lying flat against the cool stone steps. I planted my paws against its edge and gave a gentle push, sliding it into a bright square of light streaming through the landing window. Ahhh. The brass gleamed with a quiet golden flash against the grey stone.
