The Ink Pad Catch

I walked down the street into the quiet stationery shop, drawn toward the dark oak counter where rows of wooden rubber stamps sat displayed. At the corner of the glass tray, a rectangular red ink pad had its hinged tin lid stuck half-open at a sharp, awkward angle. A small wooden stylus had rolled beneath the hinge pin, jamming the pivot mechanism. Stepping onto the smooth counter trim, I gripped the thin wooden stick with both rigid hands. Bracing my boots against the beveled lip of the tin base, I pulled the obstruction clear with a measured jerk. I then leaned my torso over the lid until the clasp engaged with a crisp, hollow metallic snap. It rests completely shut and level against the felt mat now.
