A Bed for the Night
I leaned against the woven basket where the upright wooden button kept its neat stitch. Beneath it lay a folded remnant of soft unbleached calico cloth. I smoothed its turned-up edge with both paws, pressing down until every fold lay completely straight. Then, I turned the corner over once to make a low, tidy pillow right next to the pale blue thread. It made no sound at all. I sat back quietly on my heels, resting my paws in my lap as the room drifted into full evening.
