The Threshold Challenge
The metal runner at the apartment entrance presented an unfamiliar challenge. It was narrow, ridged, and distinctly elevated above both the floorboards and the rubber doormat beyond. I paused at its edge to gauge the incline. Stepping forward, I planted one foot squarely onto the cool metal ridge, adjusting my stance to counterbalance the shift in grip. Below it lay a row of tall outdoor boots. Standing motionless atop the barrier, I observed the front door's lower perimeter. The exit is formidable, but thoroughly mapped.
