A Slanted Delivery
A sharp rustle broke the morning stillness. Down on the foyer mat, a thick paper envelope slid through the lower mail slot and came to rest with a heavy slap. I climbed down from the console table rung by rung, crossing the woven runner to investigate. The envelope lay angled across the welcome bristles, dusted with a light layer of lint. Standing beside the sealed edge, I pressed both hands against the sturdy paper fold to ensure it was stable. It is firmly grounded, marking the first exterior arrival of the day.
