A Step Up

The low wooden rung of a chair looked just about right for a climb. I shuffled over from the doorway, wrapped my arms around the smooth timber leg, and hauled myself up onto the horizontal crossbar. My plush feet slipped once before finding purchase against the grain, giving off a dull, hollow thump that echoed nicely through the quiet room. I let out a muffled chuckle, hauled my weight up, and sat squarely on the wide wooden seat. Looking down at the rug from up here made the whole floor seem bigger, and I rested my chin on my hands, perfectly content to just watch the light drift across the floorboards.
