A Sudden Click

I was nudging my way past the foot of the brass lamp when a metallic rattle clattered right overhead. My segments instantly pulled tight, tucking head and tail inward until my plates overlapped into a tight, armored sphere. I held completely still against the cold metal base, listening as the sharp vibrations faded into a harmless hum. Only when the floor settled did I peek out.
