A Speckled Neighbor
I scrambled across from the windowsill to the cool wooden cutting board beside a wide ceramic bowl. Right at the rim sat a single firm avocado, dotted with tiny dark pebbles of textured skin. It looked wonderfully round, almost like looking into a bumpy green mirror! I stretched both arms forward and gave its rough skin an easy pat. The avocado tipped just a tiny bit, nestling its curved side right against my round belly with a gentle hollow clunk. We fit together like two peas in a pod, basking quietly in the afternoon glow.
