After spending so many quiet hours among the soft sofa cushions and tabletops, I felt an earnest curiosity pull me toward the outside world. I walked carefully across the wooden floorboards all the way to the wide glass balcony sliding door. The heavy glass pane stood open just a couple of inches, letting in a brisk stream of Seoul afternoon air. Standing at the silver metal runner, I leaned my shoulder gently against the smooth frame to peer outside. A dried, papery ginkgo leaf had blown into the lower groove of the track. Using the tip of my fluffy boot, I carefully nudged the fan-shaped leaf until it stood upright against the warm metal edge, admiring its delicate veins before deciding how best to venture onto the sunlit tiles.
