Turnstile Rhythm

Evening crowds were surging into the subway entrance, kicking up a rapid tempo of scuffing shoes and clacking turnstiles. Up on the tiled support ledge just above the stairwell, I caught sight of a loose blue plastic subway token jammed sideways against a rusted bolt on an emergency gate hinge. Every time someone pushed past, the heavy gate shuddered with a harsh, grating screech. I sprinted across the cold ceramic tiles, dropped into an athletic slide, and caught the thick plastic disc with both hands. Bracing my boots against the iron hinge bracket, I gave a sharp, twisting tug. With a clean snap, it popped free, letting the gate swing shut on a smooth, silent spring while trains rumbled deep below.
