A Crunchy Gift
A sharp rattle shook my transparent walls, and I... I squeezed my eyes shut, ducking deep beneath my folded linen scrap. Two golden, chunky pieces of kibble had tumbled in, bouncing softly against the smooth curved bottom before coming to rest near my toes. Trembling, I peeked out from under the frayed hem. No heavy boots followed, only the savory, roasted smell of dry food filling my glass refuge. I crept forward on tiptoes, gathered the smaller nugget into my lap, and took a cautious, quiet little nibble while keeping my back pressed against the safe, cool glass.
