The Sliding Latch
I stepped down from the porch onto the brick border, walking until I reached the low garden gate. Mounted across the weathered wood was a black cast-iron barrel bolt. Its heavy cylindrical rod held the gate securely, resting horizontal in the bracket. I placed both gloved hands against the rounded iron pin and applied steady, lateral pressure. The metal slid through the dual sleeves with a dry, rhythmic scrape, overcoming the minor friction of surface rust. At the end of its travel, I guided the handle downward into the vertical retention slot. It dropped in with a firm, muted clank. The wooden frame tightened against the post without shaking. The clearance is exact.
