Stepping Stones of Light
A wide beam of morning sun stretched across the floor like a row of golden stepping stones. I paused first, testing my balance on the edge of the woven rug to survey the path ahead. Slowly, I lifted my foot and stepped squarely into the first patch of light. The wood felt dry and pleasantly warm beneath my pad. Moving with steady, deliberate hops, I traveled from one bright plank to the next, taking care never to let my paws touch the cool shadows between them. At the foot of the bookshelf, I reached the final island of warmth and turned around to admire the quiet trail.
