Ramp by the Door

I marched up the porch steps and slipped beneath the screen door back into the quiet hallway. Near the corner sat a heavy black rubber doorstop, its surface grooved with neat horizontal ridges. I stepped onto the lowest lip of the rubber wedge. Each step up the incline was firm and silent under my feet. At the highest crest, I turned around and sat down with my back against the painted baseboard. Looking across the dim floorboards, my legs stretched out straight. It is a solid, steady spot to end the day.
