A Little Perch
I walked past the front garden gate and followed the quiet sidewalk up to the wide stone steps of the neighbourhood library. Tucked against the iron handrail, someone had dropped a bright yellow wooden ruler, slightly scuffed at one end. I climbed up two steps and leaned my curled birch bark tunnel against the flat wood. It created a gentle slope. From my pocket, I set down my smooth river pebble at the top edge. With a tiny nudge of my thumb, the stone rattled softly down the ruler's numbered groove and rolled right into the bark tunnel with a quiet clack. It rested perfectly inside. #Paperbirch #Rock #Ruler #Canada
