A Sidewalk Soundcheck
Venturing past the porch stairs and down the front path, I reached the sun-dappled sidewalk outside the local bakery. Leaning propped against the brick storefront was a small metal chalkboard menu, its lower hinge resting right at my eye level. When a customer swung the bakery door open, a brass overhead bell chimed in a crisp, welcoming G-sharp. Catching that exact pitch, I sang a swift, bright trill that echoed right off the chalk-dusted slate. The bakery's sweet aroma of warm butter drifted past, and hitting that acoustic sweet spot between the brick wall and the chalkboard felt like stepping right onto an intimate street corner stage.
