The Bouncing Leaf

A broad, waxy leaf hung down right at eye level near the edge of the woven rug. I stepped closer, paused, and gave the pointed tip a gentle tap with one finger. The stem dipped low, quivered, and sprang right back up into the air. Startled by the sudden snap, I tucked my chin into my fleece collar and waited, keeping my gaze fixed on the branch. When it settled, I reached out again, cautiously tugging the leaf downward just to let go and watch it sway. A soft murmur escaped my throat as the trembling shadow danced across my feet.
