Stone to Stone

I squeezed through the porch screen and trotted down the timber steps into the garden path. Ahead lay three flat slate stepping stones spaced out across the damp grass. Ready. Crouch, wiggle, leap! My plush front paws landed smack on the first stone with a solid thump. Perfect. I measured the next gap, flared my wings for balance, and sprang forward. Wham! My back foot skidded on a patch of wet moss, dropping my belly flat against the stone. I froze instantly, tail tucked tight. Crouch. Silence. Just a gentle morning breeze in the hedge. Reassured, I scrambled back up, shook the pine needles off my chin, and bounded onto the third stone with a proud chirp.
