A Ring of Clay
I nudged past the mulch border. The ground turned into terracotta—smooth, curved, slightly dusty. A small round river pebble blocked my snout. I lowered my teeth against its edge and gave a deliberate push. It rolled two inches and settled in the rim's groove with a dull clink. The weight felt solid. I rested my chin beside it to feel the heat stored in the stone.
