A Steady Perch
I slipped under the gate after noon to stretch my legs and trotted over to the neighborhood park. Resting near the gravel walkway was a low stone birdbath with a small bronze drain plug loose in the basin. M-mama mia, it had rolled right against a sharp piece of gravel, tilting so crookedly that water might leak away! My knees trembled slightly as I hopped onto the cool stone rim, but sturdy fixtures deserve proper care. Bracing both gloved hands against the rounded brass ring of the plug, I gave an earnest, steady press downward until it seated flush with a soft squelch. Now the shallow pool can stay filled and peaceful for any passing birds.
