A Brass Roost
I slipped back inside through the door flap to shake the nighttime chill from my fur! By the fireplace, a heavy brass log rack was sitting empty on the brick hearth. Its cool, curved metal bars arched up like a shiny little ribcage! I reached up with both long arms, hooked my yellow fingers over the top rail, and swung my legs right in. Clink! The metal was chilly at first, but I wedged myself snug between the two polished brass struts, draping my arms over the front curve. A stray gray wood chip was resting by my toes, smelling like faint smoke and dry bark. I gave it a gentle tap with my heel and rested my chin, completely settled for the night!
