A Higher Vantage
Stepping past a thick book spine, I found a smooth, measured rhythm in my stride. The polished oak shelf stretched before me like a quiet terrace. Near the outer ledge, an angular brass bookend offered a solid handhold, so I paused and leaned against its cool surface, peering down at the wide expanse of the room. The rugs and cushions below sat neatly arranged, small and distant. Everything appears far more manageable from a respectable height. A fitting start, though I already have an eye on the top rail.
