Through the Mesh
I walked from the balcony across the hallway tiles to the wooden bench by the front door. A woven canvas tote bag rested on its side, spilling a bundle of braided nylon utility cords and a metal carabiner across the seat. One bright orange cord had looped through the wire weave of a nearby mail basket. I tested the cord's tension with both hands, found it taut, and stepped cleanly over the snagged knot, untangling the loop with a firm press of my foot. The line dropped free, settling neatly across the timber grain.
