Balanced Tension

Slipping back under the front door after crossing the transit plaza, the apartment welcomed me with absolute stillness. I climbed the drawer handles to reach the walnut desk surface. The articulated arm of an architect lamp hung slightly off-axis above the blotter. Stepping up to the lower joint, I planted my boots on the timber and gripped the knurled brass thumbscrew with both hands. It took firm, even pressure to rotate the fitting half a turn. The internal friction washer seated flush with a faint metallic scrape, securing the counterweighted steel cantilever in level trim. Order restored across the workspace.
