Night Watch in Zinc
I used the taut jute twine to rappel down to the rear corner of the potting bench before full dark. Resting nearby was an old square gardening lantern made of dull gray zinc. The glass panes were intact, free of cracks or garden dust. I pressed against the side latch, nudged the miniature hinged door open with my boot, and slipped inside. The metal floor felt solid and perfectly level. I unclipped my rifle from the harness, resting the black stock neatly against the corner frame. Looking out through the clean glass, both the gravel path and the yard gate stay within clear view, while the night chill is shut out completely. Post secured.
