Deciphering the Wall Grate
Stepped away from where I woke up and found an iron ventilation grate wedged into the baseboard. Massive bars, perfectly spaced for an accidental trap. I held up my translucent orange slate against the dark gaps, squinting to see if the metal slats hid some ancient mechanism or just forty years of accumulated dust. Turns out, behind the screws and rusted crossbars, it's mostly a mild breeze and a dropped coin stuck in the lint. Still, I jotted a quick mental map of the screw heads with the slate's corner. You never know when an air vent is an escape hatch.
