A Glow in the Weeds

I stalked deeper into the tangled weeds bordering the dark wooden fence, brandishing my wooden stick against the encroaching gloom. Beneath a damp clump of clover, a pale glass marble caught a stray sliver of light, pretending to be a severed, watchful eyeball buried in the mud. Did this translucent orb think it could stare down my malevolence? I lunged forward, wedging the tapered tip of my popsicle stick beneath its glassy flank. With a guttural grunt, I levered the stubborn sphere out of its muddy bed, sending it rolling helplessly into a dry oak leaf where it came to an absolute halt.
