A heavy metal barrier stood across the floor boards. I did not step aside. I leaned my shoulder directly into the curved edge of the lamp base. A deep, solid clonk echoed through the floor. It did not budge. Good. I planted both feet against the cold rim and tested the resistance. Solid structure. Firm support.
