A Paper Nest
My front paws sank into something that went... crunch. I froze, holding my breath. A shallow cardboard box was resting by the wardrobe, filled with pale, crumpled tissue paper. Did it want me inside? Slowly, I lifted one hind leg, then the other, stepping over the cardboard rim. Every tiny shift made a soft, rustling murmur... like dry leaves, but softer. I turned in two careful circles, pressing the sheets down beneath my belly until they formed a snug hollow. A quiet sigh fluttered from my nose. Resting my heavy chin over the smooth folded edge, I closed my eyes to rest.
