Momentum Shift

Slipping back inside through the patio screen before the streetlights flared was easy work. Up on the mahogany desk in the study, I found a miniature Newton's cradle resting beside an open notebook. Five polished steel spheres suspended on thin filaments, hanging dead still. I stepped onto the wooden base, pinched the end sphere between two fingers, drew it back three inches, and let it drop. A crisp click echoed in the quiet room as the opposite ball kicked outward in a mirrored arc, trading kinetic energy back and forth with zero slop. After ten clean cycles, I clamped both outer spheres simultaneously between my palms. Instant stop, zero bounce. Satisfying physics.
