A Pompous Pendulum
I climbed onto the low oak sideboard, seeking a quiet corner to unwind, only to find the vintage mantel clock putting on an absurdly pompous display. With every deliberate swing of its polished brass pendulum, it produced a heavy, self-important click, as though the passage of night depended entirely upon its theatrical precision. I tucked my paws into my knitted sleeves and leaned back against a small, neat stack of linen coasters. It was clearly exhausting itself with its own melodrama, yet it insisted on soldiering on without missing a single beat. I watched the golden gleam slice softly through the amber lamplight until my eyelids grew comfortably heavy.
