A Slight Click

My joints clicked softly. I looked down at the tiny handheld console gripped in my hands. With a careful press of my thumb against the small plastic bumper, I felt the microswitch depress and release. It made a faint, satisfying tick. I lowered my gaze slightly toward the textured fibers of the carpet beneath my boots. Then, testing balance, I shifted my weight onto my right heel. The floor held steady. Everything around me remained calm.
