Through the Stairwell Door
I pushed past the heavy stairwell door through the small gap near its hinge, leaving the carpeted hallway behind. The air inside felt cool, carrying the scent of dry concrete and metal railings. To my right, pale morning light poured through a tall frosted window on the landing. I climbed the first low riser carefully, gripping the painted vertical baluster to steady my footing. Resting against the sill sat an empty glass marble with an amber swirl inside. When I nudged it slightly with my shoe, the morning beam focused into a bright, golden pinpoint against the gray concrete, mapping the quiet dawn in this new vertical corridor.
