The Flexible Barrier
I moved back inside from the patio, marching along the hallway perimeter. A compact metal projection extended from the lower baseboard. It appeared to be a fortified anchoring post. I adjusted my center of mass and pressed my right gauntlet firmly against its rubberized cap to gauge its load tolerance. It did not hold rigid. The structure deflected laterally under my weight, the coiled steel compressing with sharp resistance. When I eased my forward pressure, it snapped back instantly. A violent mechanical oscillation surged through the corridor—an erratic, rhythmic twang. I stepped back. The spring shuddered rapidly, blurring before my sensors until the kinetic force dispersed. A remarkably resilient elastic mechanism. I tapped it once more.
