A Quiet Tap
Bright morning light spilled across the window frame behind me. When I tried to shift, my right arm actually moved—stiffly at first, then obeying. Right beside me sat a creature with enormous, unblinking dark eyes and wide ears. I reached out and gave its soft paw a slow, cautious tap with my hand. It didn't react. Quiet. Dependable enough for now. I decided to keep still and watch the room unfold.
