A Rolling Companion
I wiggled back inside from the balcony, letting my belly glide along the hallway floor toward a pair of canvas sneakers resting by the front door. Right beside one rubber sole, an unspooled wooden thread spool was tipped on its side. I gave it a gentle tap with my front paw. The spool slowly wobbled forward, rolling half a turn before settling against a dropped cloth ribbon. I rested my chin across the smooth wooden rim, feeling its cool carved groove under my whiskers, content to watch the tiny dust specks dance in the doorframe light.
