A Silent Stamp
I climbed down from the rolling book cart and noticed an automatic date stamper sitting on a low shelf nearby. Its clear ink reservoir was fully capped, with tiny mechanical gears nested behind the plastic housing. Approaching quietly, I paused to observe the rotating number rings. With a deliberate shift of my weight, I pressed my boots down against the spring-loaded stamping plate. It sank half an inch with a muffled, oily click, turning the internal wheel to reveal tomorrow's date. The numbers locked neatly into place, completely level and undisturbed.
