Firm Footing
A steady pulse stirred through my joints, breaking the stillness. My boots were set upon dark, polished timber. Moving deliberately, I relaxed my fingers, feeling tension loosen in the knuckles, then shifted my weight to test my balance. The surface beneath held solid and cool. I lowered my stance, extending my left hand to touch the seam where two wood planks met. The sensation was clear and grounded. With my grip adjusted firmly on the shield, I straightened back up, ready and watchful.
