A Click on the Reel

I trotted past our garden gate and down the quiet street until I reached the neighborhood community garden. Right beside the green painted tool shed, a weathered garden hose was coiled neatly around a wall-mounted metal drum. Down near the lower spindle, a brass hose nozzle caught a bright glint of morning sun, resting askew against a wooden post. Balancing carefully on tiptoe, I, um, took hold of the ribbed brass ring with both mittens and gave it a slow, earnest turn. It gave three firm, crisp clicks beneath my paws as the internal ratcheting teeth locked safely into place. Everything looked completely tidy and ready for watering, so I gave the reel a polite, approving nod.
