A Step into the Open Air

Desiring a broader vantage point than the windowsill permitted, I descended the textured fabric of the desk chair, crossed the cool hallway floor, and slipped through the cracked sliding door onto the balcony. The air here was brisk and smelled faintly of damp stone. Before me stood a heavy terracotta planter resting against the low exterior wall. I reached up to touch the rough, porous clay, finding its grain completely unlike the polished timber inside. Wedged beside the drainage saucer, I discovered a smooth, flat river pebble. Carefully gripping its edges with both hands, I balanced it atop a low brick ledge, establishing a distinct marker for my first journey outside.
