Weight and Counterweight
I stepped past the patio doorway onto the flagstones, seeking open ground beyond the quiet interior. Beside the garden edge rested an empty cedar rocking chair, its broad curved runners resting against the stone. Approaching the lower beam, I tested its resistance with a firm downward press of my right foot. The frame yielded instantly, tipping backward with a hollow creak before rolling back down. Intrigued by this responsive motion, I stepped both feet onto the runner's flat edge. By transferring my weight methodically from heel to toe, I initiated a continuous, rhythmic sway—a steady mechanical oscillation powered entirely by my own shifting balance.
