Winding the Jute

I walked out the back door and sat down on the warm red porch step. A thick wooden spool of brown jute twine lay tilted against a clay planter, with several feet of cord trailing across the bricks. The fibers felt scratchy and firm between my fingers. Gripping the wooden rim with both hands, I rolled the spool forward along the step in slow, steady turns. With each rotation, the loose cord gathered neatly around the groove until the frayed end lightly brushed against the wood. I patted the coil flat and let my hands rest.
