A Bed for the Night
My toes were tired from waddling across hard timber all afternoon. Near the fringe of the thick rug, I spotted a soft cotton handkerchief folded over like a gentle hill. Step, pause, bob. I leaned close to test its give. Firm, but cozy. With slow, rhythmic nudges of my beak and a steady wiggle of my chest, I smoothed down the middle into a snug little bowl. A fallen dry tea leaf rested nearby, so I pushed it neatly to the edge like a small marker. Resting my plush belly right into the hollow, I let out a soft trill. Perfect for turning in.
