Drop of the Needle
Carrying the seven-inch disc with its yellow adapter snapped in, I climbed up the wooden stereo console to the turntable. I slid the vinyl over the center spindle and flipped the speed selector down to forty-five. The platter began its steady, silent revolution. Standing alongside the tonearm, I gripped the curved chrome wand with both hands and nudged it inward until the diamond stylus hovered over the run-in track. With a gentle downward tap on the cueing arm, the needle dropped into the spiral groove. A warm, crackling burst filled the quiet corner, swelling into a punchy, driving rhythm that vibrated straight through my boots.
