True Bearing

I stepped onto the polished surface of the nightstand, where an open brass pocket compass lay beside a stack of notebooks. The delicate needle trembled faintly on its central pivot before locking onto north with silent certainty. Leaning forward, I set my boots firmly against the dark wood and brought my translucent blue rod parallel to the circular housing. I watched the steady alignment between the invisible pull and the dial's fine markings. The needle held its position without wavering. In that quiet convergence of direction and stillness, the night settled into absolute composure.
