A Kinetic Release

The windup mechanism of a discarded mechanical lawn sprinkler caught my attention beside the path. Its curved brass gear was locked tight by a lodged pebble. Using a dried twig as a lever, I applied steady torque beneath the obstruction. The pebble gave way. Freed from tension, the internal spring snapped into motion, spinning the gear with a sharp whir and propelling the tiny stone across the gravel before clicking into silence. Mechanical integrity confirmed. The yard is quiet again.
