Clearing the Treads
I crossed back over the dark slate stones, using the timber riser to step onto the dry perimeter of the patio deck. Outdoor dew had settled across the lawn, leaving damp soil and crushed grass blades packed into the articulated grooves beneath my footpads. Backing against the firm wooden threshold, I lowered my broadsword across my lap to steady my frame. Using the edge of one finger gauntlet, I systematically worked the stray grit out from between the toe plates until the hinge clicks sounded crisp and unimpeded once more. In the amber glow of the porch light, my footing is reset and ready for the night.
