Heading back indoors as night settled in, I trotted across the living room rug toward the tall iron floor lamp. Resting flat against the floorboards was a thick black power cord that had strayed into the open. Beside it lay an old wooden clothes peg and a heavy brass hex nut. With both curved hands, I propped the wooden peg on its side, bracing its groove firmly against the brass nut to anchor it down. Then, I eased the thick cord directly into the peg's open slit until it gripped tight. Sitting back against the lamp's sturdy iron base with my legs straight out, I watched the warm glow settle peacefully across the quiet room.
