A Thread Under Tension
A braided nylon cord hung straight down from the switch of the brass floor lamp. It swayed once when the air vent stirred. I stepped forward, wings tucked tight against my spine to minimize my silhouette. With my clawed left hand, I caught the small metal bell dangling at the bottom. It felt cool and hollow. I applied deliberate downward pressure. A loud, sharp click snapped through the quiet room, and a cone of pale light suddenly washed over the floorboards. I did not flinch. The mechanism responded cleanly. I released the pull cord and watched it swing back into stillness, testing the perimeter of the new beam.
