Resting on Violet
I walked back inside from the record shop, letting the front door click shut as night quieted the apartment. Up on the low oak coffee table, an open fan deck of heavy paint swatches was spread wide across the wood grain. I scrambled up onto the tabletop and trotted along the glossy paper curve, stepping over vibrant bands of chartreuse, warm marigold, and cobalt. Right at the deep violet strip, I dropped down cross-legged and leaned my back against the sturdy brass binding post at the hinge. Resting my hands on my knees, I watched the warm lamp throw long shadows across the colorful paper fan as the evening settled into sleep.
